Creating Gift Offers

Everybody loves the holidays season, so why not turn every day into a holiday? You can make your customers feel celebrated with every order they make.

But besides playing Santa every day, there are other reasons for creating Gift offers. Like the spending Goal offer, this also revolves around incentivizing your customers to go the extra mile and add one more product to the cart to reach the threshold for the shiny gift.

Apply the same strategy. First, obtain the Average Order Value, reported in the Shopify admin, under the Analytics menu in the Dashboards section. Set an aim for the spending goal and choose a suitable gift product. "Suitable" based on your strategy. Depending on your business, you can choose a product that increases brand awareness, such as a branded cap or mug. You could also choose products that don't perform well, and you simply want to deplete the inventory. Of course, you could also choose a gift that complements the order, like a hat for buying from the winter collection.

Let's sum up the use cases for the Gift offers:

  • Increase brand awareness
  • Increase AOV (Average Order Value)
  • Increase customer satisfaction

How to set up Gift upsell offers in your store

To start creating Gift upsell offers, simply click the Apps link on the Vitals sidebar (on your Shopify admin) and look for Gift under the Upsells category.

If you already have previously created Gift offers, you will see them listed. To create a new Gift offer, click Create Gift.

Creating a Gift upsell offer is now seamless thanks to the updated step-by-step upsell creation Wizard. Let us go through the steps:

  1. Product Eligibility - This step allows you to define which products are part of the upsell offer being created.

In this step, you can define the products involved in your Gift upsell offer. It is divided into two sections:

  • Products that can be purchased to claim the gift - By default, it is set to "Any Product", which means that any products purchased can trigger the free gift (besides the required amount - more on that on the next step). But you can also change this to specific products or collections depending on your intended campaign.
  • Product rewarded as a gift - This will be the product that will act as a free gift once the requirements have been reached.

💡 If you set the Gift upsell offer to only be added if specific products/collections are purchased, the widget is not going to be displayed on product pages that are not eligible for the Gift.

For example, if the eligible products for the gift offer are from the Winter collection, the offer will not be displayed in the Summer collection.

This is to avoid misleading the customers with a gift they cannot achieve when buying the product they are looking at.

Once these are properly set up (you can see a sample preview on the right sidebar), you can proceed to the next step - Discount Details.

  1. Discount Details - This is where you will define how much is required for the customer's order to be eligible for the attached free gift.

This will be based on your store's default currency.

Once done, you can proceed to the next step - Appearance.

  1. Appearance - Here you can change the different visual settings of the gift upsell offer. This is divided into two sections - Floating Gift Widget and Text Formatting.

    Floating Gift Widget

In this section, you can change the look and feel of the floating Gift widget. Some of the options that you can change are the gift icon and its color and where it can be placed using the given controls (left, right, and the specific distance from the top of the page for a precise location).

You can also select the desired pages where you would only like this gift upsell offer to appear.

💡 Note the appearance settings of the widget are applied to all the gift upsell offers created in your store. You cannot have separate appearance settings for multiple gifts.

When you create multiple gift offers, they will be rendered in the same widget, with a scroll bar helping vertical navigation. Below is a sample of two gift upsell offers that are active.

    Text Formatting

This section focuses on the text strings involving the Gift upsell offer. Even though there are default sentences already placed, you can customize them according to your desired voice and approach.

Once you are done customizing all of these visual aspects, you can then proceed to review them in the last step - Review.

    4. Review - Simply put, this step summarizes all the options you selected from Step 1 - Product Eligibility. Should you decide to change them, you can go back to the specific step conveniently.

In addition, other internal aspects like the internal name of the offer (to help you identify the upsell offers within the app), and its Cart label (the text that will accompany the discount of this offer).

Lastly, once you're satisfied with your selections and ready to have this upsell offer active, simply change the Offer status to Active and publish the offer.

💡 Our gift app was not thought out for offering a $0 item as a gift.

The app's purpose is to offer a Gift that actually has value, but is discounted to $0 when your gift upsell condition is true.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. Q: Is the Gift provided automatically to the customers after they meet the criteria?

A: No! The gift needs to be manually claimed by the customers. This is to prevent abnormal behaviors due to incompatibility with any themes. When a customer clicks the Claim Gift button, the product will be added to the cart with a note "Free of charge". The product price is then discounted from the cart total.

  2. Q: What happens if there are 2 gift offers, on different products eligibility (let's say one for Winter Collection and  one for Spring Collection) and the customer meets both Gifts' spending goals?

A: The customer can claim both gifts separately, and the discount from the total will be accounted to both Gifts.

  3. Q: What happens if there are two gift offers from the same eligible products?

A: The customer will be able to choose the Gift he wants to receive. Choosing another Gift than the one already claimed will remove the initial one from the cart.

  4. Q: Is the Gift amount spent influenced by other discounts?

A: Yes! The other cart discounts are applied before the Gift is calculated. For example, with a Gift at $100, if the cart subtotal drops below $100, due to other discounts, the Gift will not be provided.
