Last updated on October 26, 2026

Yes, Vitals adds SEO alt text to Shopify product images. The SEO ALT Tags app is part of Vitals: Reviews, Bundles & 40+ on the Shopify App Store. It writes alt text to every image of your products from one template, using details such as the product title, vendor and your store name, so images can be found in Google Image Search. New and edited products get their alt text automatically while the app is on.

When SEO ALT Tags is not the right fit

  • You want alt text added only where it is missing. There is no option to fill only empty alt text: included products get the template text, and Vitals keeps no copy of text that is replaced. To keep your own alt text on some products, exclude them under Advanced display rules.
  • You have 10,000 or more products and need a one-click bulk update. The bulk update is not available at that size.
  • You need a full SEO suite. The app covers product image alt text only.

Improving your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is not always an easy task, as the algorithms behind web crawlers like Google are very sophisticated. Still, there are ways to help improve your SEO ranking, and adding Alt-tags to your images is one of them.

Shopify even released a tutorial on this topic which you can find here: Adding keywords for SEO to your Shopify store.

With the SEO Alt-Tags app, you will be able to add alt-tags to all of your product images automatically. You can add helpful tags like your store's name, plus the product's title or vendor, so that it contains the most relevant information and helps get the images indexed easier. If you use the variant title, images assigned to a variant use that variant's title. Images without an assigned variant use the product's first variant title, so remove the variant title from your format if you do not want it included.

If you do not want to rewrite ALT text for every product, open Advanced display rules. Choose Update only specific products to rewrite selected products, or Exclude products to skip selected products.

Once you're done choosing the information added to the alt-tags, all you need to do is click the Update Products button and let the app add the alt-tags. This process can take up to a few minutes, depending on how many products you have.

Please keep in mind that if you're adding new products to your Shopify store, the Alt-tags will not need to be manually updated. As long as the app is enabled, the tags will be automatically added to your new products!

The one-click bulk update is available only for stores with fewer than 10,000 products. Stores of any size still get alt text automatically on new and edited products while the app is on.
