Provide a discount code after a customer submits a review
As your customers submit a review through the Product Reviews app, you can also have the option to reward them with a discount that they can use towards their next purchase. They will receive this reward via email like below (email template is customizeable):
This feature is highly useful for two reasons:
- Increases your social proof, as you will have a higher chance of getting more reviews
- Increases your conversion rate, as customers are highly likely to order again on your store with their exclusive discount.
How to enable this feature
This feature can be enabled by going to your Product Reviews app's settings, under the Request Reviews tab, specifically the Discount for reviews section and enabling the option "Offer a discount code to customers after they leave a review":
However, before enabling this feature, it is for the best interest to ensure that the settings are properly updated and used. Below are the settings that you can change with this feature:
- Offer a discount code to customers after they leave a review
- This is a checkbox that will enable the feature according to the current settings below it.
- Send the discount to reviewers from
- This setting has two options that you can choose from:
- Review Requests Only - This is the default value. If this option is chosen, the email message that contains the discount code as a reward will only be sent if the customer submitted a review that originated from the automated review request email.
- On-site and Review Requests - If this option is chosen, both reviewers that submitted a review from the automated review request email and reviewers that submitted a review through the store's product page itself will receive the discount code (as long as the reviewer provided a valid email address upon submitting the review)
- This setting has two options that you can choose from:
- Discount value
- This setting determines how much discount the discount code to be created will provide.
- There are two discount types that can be used:
- Percentage - Selecting this option means that the discount will be a percentage off the order. This means that its equivalent monetary value may change depending on the total order amount.
- Fixed Amount - Selecting this option means that the discount is a fixed monetary amount.
- Discount generation method
- This setting determines how the discount code will be given to the reviewer.
- There are two options that can be chosen:
- Auto-generate
- If this option is chosen, our Vitals app will automatically generate a discount code that has the defined discount value above. This automatically generated discount code is unique and only usable by the reviewer.
- Single Shopify Discount
- If this option is chosen, you can create your own customized discount code to be sent to the reviewer. However, this code must be created on your Shopify admin > Discounts first in order for it to work.
- Auto-generate
Please be aware that if you selected the "Single Shopify Discount" option above and wrote your own custom discount code, but you did not create this same discount code on Shopify admin > Discounts, the discount code will still be sent to the reviewer, but it will not work once the reviewer tries to enter it during their next order.
When you're all set with the various settings above, you can also customize the email template that will contain the discount code you will send after the reviewer submits their review:
By clicking Show Full Preview, it will provide you with a preview of the email template, together with an option to test how it looks on your Email inbox, by providing your email address.
Clicking the Customize Template button will show you a full editor where you can edit the body of your email.
💡 While creating your email via the rich template editor, please be guided by the different variables that you can use within, as they represent specific elements. A full list can be seen by clicking the "See Variables" link on the upper-right side of the editor. Below are the common ones:
Variable | Description |
---|---|
{{ discount_code }} | This is where the defined discount code will appear |
{{ discount_value }} | This is where the discount value set inside our app will appear. |
{{ store_name }} | This is where your store name will appear. |
{{ store_url }} | This is where your store URL will appear. |
{{ customer_first_name }} | This is where the first name of the reviewer/recipient will appear. |
{{ discount_url }} | Link to homepage, that includes the discount code in the url. |
💡 Please note that with the {{ discount_value }} variable, it will only show the discount value that is set inside this feature's settings.
Therefore, if you chose the "Single Shopify Discount" as a Discount Generation Method, the {{ discount_value }} variable might not show the correct discount value, as the discount value of your discount code is how it was defined via your Shopify admin > Discounts section.
💡 Once a customer submits a review this way, it will be final and not modifiable inside the app. This is part of proper compliance with Shopify's Acceptable Use Policy.
