Understanding the Shipping Information Rules

The Shipping Information app is based on the price-based Shipping Profiles that you create in your Shopify Admin. The app will always take into account geolocation and display the rules based on your shipping zones:

  • If you are on a product page included in a Custom Shipping Profile, the app will show the shipping rules that are eligible for that product based on the product value.
  • If you are on a product page that isn't included in a Custom Shipping Profile, the app will show the rules based on the value of the products added to the cart.

General Profile

When it comes to shipping, the first thing you'll create in your Shopify admin is the General Profile. Under it, you'll add Shipping Zones, and for each zone, you'll add one or more Shipping Rules. These rules are the ones that apply to specific countries (or all of them) that are not specific to a particular product but apply for all of them. If your store has only a General Profile set up, the rules displayed for both paid and free shipping will be dependent on the value of the products added to Cart.

Custom Shipping Profiles

In Shopify, you can create up to 99 custom shipping profiles. You can use them to add custom shipping rates for specific products. These product-specific rules will always prioritize the rules based on your General Profile so that the Shipping Information app will display the corresponding rules based on the current product's price.

Let's consider this example:

You sell 4 products:

  • A - $20
  • B - $50
  • C - $70
  • D - $120

and you've configured these shipping profiles:

General Profile - Worldwide Custom Profile (products X and Y)
Express Shipping for orders between $0 - $60 costs $20 Express Shipping for orders between $0 - $100 costs $40
Express Shipping for orders above $60 costs $10 Express Shipping for orders above $100 costs $20
Standard Shipping for orders between $0 - $60 costs $5 Standard Shipping for orders between $0 - $100 costs $10
Standard Shipping for orders above $60 is free Standard Shipping for orders above $100 is free
  1. If no product is added to the cart and a visitor is checking our product A - this product is not included in any custom profiles, so we check the cart value; it's 0; hence these rules show up:

    • Express Shipping for orders between $0 - $60 costs $20
    • Standard Shipping for orders between $0 - $60 costs $5
  2. The visitor then checks product X - this product is included in the custom profile, so we display the shipping rule based on the product's value:

    • Express Shipping for orders between $0 - $100 costs $40
    • Standard Shipping for orders between $0 - $100 costs $10
  3. The visitor adds to cart product X (worth $70), then checks out product B. This product is not included in any custom profiles, so we check the cart value; it's $70; hence these rules show up:

    • Express Shipping for orders above $60 costs $10
    • Standard Shipping for orders above $60 is free
