Shopify's Multi-Currency Guide

Shopify's "Sell in multiple currencies with Shopify Payments" (in short: Multi-Currency) is a long-awaited feature introduced by Shopify in August 2019. It's only available for stores using Shopify Payments. Merchants from 16 countries use this feature to let their customers shop and checkout in 133 local currencies.

There are a few things you need to know about Shopify's Multi-Currency:

  • only Shopify Plus stores get an automatic conversion to local currencies based on geo-location. This is a feature "democratized" by Vitals and made available to all Shopify stores;
  • Vitals Currency Converter was the first app that was integrated with Shopify's Multi-Currency.

The currency conversion is handled by our app and uses the exchange rate provided by the same service Shopify is using for getting real-time rate updates: openexchangerates.org. As we control the currency conversion, we can always control the rounding rules, which you can customize in the app.

The Multi-Currency feature is only supported when the checkout is being done through Shopify Payments - the currency will not be converted if you are placing the order through a different payment gateway or a third-party app like PayPal. Read more about this.

Selling in multiple currencies is only supported by Shopify Payments. Orders placed using PayPal, or other third-party payment providers are processed in your store currency
