Cart Drawer troubleshooting: theme cart opens too, cart not updating, upsells or goals missing
Last updated on October 31, 2026
Common Cart Drawer problems and what you can check yourself. For setup and all options, see Cart Drawer on Shopify with Vitals: features, pricing and setup.
All Cart Drawer settings are in Vitals → Apps → Upsells → Cart Drawer.
Your theme's cart drawer opens too, or the cart only updates after a refresh
This happens when your theme's own drawer, or another cart drawer app, runs next to the Vitals drawer. The other drawer doesn't see changes made in the Vitals drawer until the page reloads.
- Turn off your theme's cart drawer. In Shopify, open Online Store → Themes → Customize and look in the theme settings for the cart setting (often called Cart type). Set it to the cart page instead of the drawer, then save. The name and place of this setting differ between themes.
- Check for another cart drawer app. If the Cart Drawer settings page shows Another cart drawer app might be causing a conflict, or names an app, only one drawer can work at a time. Click Manage apps and turn off or uninstall the other app.
- If the cart count is still wrong with only the Vitals drawer active, contact our support team with your store link and the name of your theme.
The drawer appears behind other elements
- Go to Cart Drawer → General settings → Overlay priority and raise the number (the default is 1000).
- If the drawer is still covered after you save and reload your store, contact our support team.
The spending goal, gifts or upsells don't show in the drawer
Each comes from an Upsell Builder offer and has its own switch in the drawer.
- Turn on the section. In Cart Drawer, open Spending goal → Show goals, or Gift → Show gifts. Both are off by default. Product upsells and recommendations → Show product upsells is on by default.
- Complete the checklist. If a section shows a checklist instead of its options, complete it: the Upsell Builder app must be active, with at least one active offer of that type.
- Upsell suggestions: open the offer in Upsell Builder and make sure Cart page is on under Placements. More checks are in Why are my Cart Upsell Suggestions not working?
- Spending goal: the drawer shows the goal only once the cart has items. Open the Spending Goal offer and, under Placements, turn on Vitals cart drawer. New goals start with only Product page on, so they don't show in the drawer until you do. A goal with Floating offer on also shows in the drawer.
- Payment icons, announcement bars and Cart Notice also need their own switch: Payment logos → Show payment logos, and Announcement bars → Show messages from the Announcement Bar app or Show the Cart Notice app message. They are off by default, and the other app must be on too.
Add to Cart doesn't open the Vitals drawer
- Check that the drawer is active. If the Cart Drawer page shows Your cart drawer isn't active yet, click Activate app. If no Vitals apps show on your store, see Vitals apps not appearing on your store?
- Check the open setting. Go to Cart Drawer → General settings → Add to cart and make sure Open the cart drawer when a product is added to the cart is ticked. When it's off, the drawer stays closed after an add and shoppers open it from the cart icon.
- Product page goes to the cart or checkout instead. Open Preferences → After Add to cart and choose Auto detect your theme settings (supported themes) or Stay on the same page. With Cart page or Checkout page, shoppers are sent there and the drawer doesn't open. An Upsell Builder offer can have its own Add to cart redirect; set it to Use global setting to follow Preferences.
- Collection pages or quick add open the theme's cart instead. Turn off your theme's cart drawer and any other cart drawer app, as described above.
- If the Vitals drawer still doesn't open from a page, contact our support team with a link to that page.
