Why are my products showing as unavailable?
Last updated on October 19, 2026
If all or most products show as unavailable on your storefront, Shopify determines whether each product variant can be purchased. Vitals reads that availability; it does not set it.
Check product availability in Shopify
- Identify where the unavailable message appears. It may be on your theme’s product-page button or in a Vitals widget, such as an upsell variant dropdown, Sticky Add to Cart, or Wishlist.
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Locations and make sure you have at least one active location.
- Go to Products, open an affected product, and check its inventory. For each variant, check whether inventory is tracked, whether stock is above zero, and whether Continue selling when out of stock is enabled. A tracked variant with zero stock and this setting turned off is unavailable in Shopify.
- Make sure the product is published to the Online Store and to the market where the shopper is browsing.
Once the variant is available for purchase in the shopper’s market, your theme’s purchase button will update. If you need help with your Shopify market or location setup, contact Shopify Support.
How Vitals widgets handle unavailable products
Vitals widgets use the availability provided by Shopify. Turning off a widget removes its unavailable label, but does not change the product’s Shopify availability.
- Related Products: Hide out of stock products is enabled by default.
- Instant Search: Include out of stock products is disabled by default.
- Upsell Builder: offers in the Product page and Pop-up on Add to Cart placements can still show a product when all of its variants are unavailable, with an unavailable variant selected. This applies to the product being viewed and to products you added to the offer one by one. Products added through a collection or picked automatically, Gift offers, and other placements such as Cart page, Pop-up on Checkout and Thank you page leave such products out.
If your products are genuinely out of stock, you can use Back in Stock to let shoppers sign up for notifications when they become available again.
