[NEW] Adding the Legal Guarantee Notice to Your Order Confirmation Email

The notice on your store covers the moment before a purchase. EU law also wants it in the order confirmation - as the Order email tab of the EU Legal Guarantee app puts it: "EU law requires the notice in the order confirmation too. Shopify doesn't let apps edit notification emails, so paste this snippet into your template once." This article walks you through that process and explains why the app sometimes asks you to do it again.

Until you confirm the snippet is in place, the checklist on the Notice tab shows a red row: "Add the notice to your order confirmation".

What the snippet does

Vitals builds the snippet from your Notice settings, so the email and the store agree about who gets the notice:

  • If "Show to" is "Customers in the EU", the email shows the notice only for orders shipped (or billed) to an EU country.
  • If "Hide for B2B customers" is on, orders placed by a business location skip it.
  • If "Skip gift cards and digital products" is on, orders with nothing to ship skip it.
  • If GARAN labels are on, the email also lists each labeled product with its guarantee years, brand, and model — and, if you set a "Guarantee conditions link", that link.

In the email, the notice appears as the official image with its title and headline as text underneath (so it still reads if the customer's mail app blocks images) and the "Learn more" link to the EU's Your Europe page.

How to add it

  1. Open the Vitals dashboard, go to the EU Legal Guarantee app, and select the Order email tab.

  2. Pick the "Notice language". The dropdown opens on the language you last confirmed, or on the language you pinned under "Notice language" on the Notice tab; if you have set neither, it opens on "Customer's language", which "picks the notice from the language of the order, and falls back to your store's main language." Or pin one of the 24 EU languages for every order.
  3. Click "Copy snippet".
  4. Click "Open the Order confirmation email in Shopify" and click Edit code.
  5. Follow the tab's placement note: "Near the end of the code, find the line <table class="row footer">  (the footer that starts "If you have any questions, reply to this email"). Paste the snippet on a new line just above it."
  6. Save, then send yourself a test email from Shopify to check it.
  7. Back in Vitals, tick "I added this snippet to my Order confirmation template" and click Save. The checkbox turns to "Confirmed on [date]", and the Notice tab's checklist row turns green: "Your order confirmation includes the notice".

💡Why the checkbox? As the tab explains under it: "Shopify doesn't let apps read your email templates, so your confirmation is how we know."

When you need to paste it again

The snippet depends on your settings. Change "Show to", "Hide for B2B customers", "Skip gift cards and digital products", or the GARAN details that go into the email - whether labels are on, which products and guarantee lengths they cover, the brand and model sources, or the "Guarantee conditions link" - and the snippet in your template no longer matches. The tab then shows the warning "Paste the new snippet": "This snippet is different from the one you added on [date]. Replace the old one in your Order confirmation template with this one, then confirm again." The checklist turns red at the same time: "Update the notice in your order confirmation". Picking a different "Notice language" on this tab works differently: the warning does not appear, but the confirmation box unticks because the snippet on screen is now a different one. Copy it, replace the old block in your template, and tick the box again.

Copy the new snippet, replace the old block in your template (it starts with a comment that reads "EU legal guarantee notice, added by …" followed by the name of the app you installed), save in Shopify, and tick the confirmation again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't Vitals add the notice to my emails for me?

Shopify does not let apps edit or read notification templates. The snippet is the one way to get the notice into the order confirmation, and your confirmation tick is the one way the app can know it is there.

Which language does the customer's email use?

With "Customer's language", the language of the order - the one the customer shopped in - provided the notice exists in it; otherwise your store's main language. If you pin a language on this tab, every order gets that version.

Will every order confirmation show the notice?

Only the ones your Notice settings cover: EU orders if "Show to" is "Customers in the EU", consumer orders if "Hide for B2B customers" is on, and orders with something to ship if "Skip gift cards and digital products" is on. Turn those settings off on the Notice tab and paste the new snippet if you want it in every email.

Does the email include the GARAN label?

It lists each labelled product's guarantee years, brand and model as text, plus your guarantee conditions link if you set one. The label artwork itself is not drawn in the email.

The checklist still says "Add the notice to your order confirmation" after I pasted the snippet.

Tick "I added this snippet to my Order confirmation template" on the Order email tab and click Save. Vitals cannot see your template, so the tick is what turns the row green. If the row says "Update" rather than "Add", your settings changed since you last confirmed - copy the new snippet, replace the old one and confirm again.

I sent a test email, and the notice isn't in it. What should I check?

That you pasted the snippet just above the footer table, as described on the tab, and saved the template in Shopify. Then check whether your test order matches your settings: with "Show to" on "Customers in the EU", an order to a non-EU address shows nothing, and with "Skip gift cards and digital products" on, an order with nothing to ship shows nothing.
